Ben Simmons Is Joining The Boomers Tokyo Olympics Squad

Alongside Joe Ingles and Matisse Thybulle.

It was only last week that we reported President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach had insisted that the already-postponed Tokyo games would go ahead in July.

While he couldn’t guarantee there would be spectators and denied that pushing ahead with the tournament as the world faces lethal third-waves of the coronavirus pandemic was “irresponsible”, Bach said the body had committed to the games going ahead.

Now, it seems that the event is indeed moving forward with news that Ben Simmons was named as part of a star-studded Boomers squad for Tokyo Olympics.

Simmons, who has said it would be an amazing honour to play for Australia and is hopeful of playing for the Boomers at this year’s Olympic Games, would be part of a 24-man squad including the likes of Joe Ingles, Patty Mills and Matisse Thybulle.

“It would be an amazing honour to play for my country,” Simmons said.

“I know things are uncertain right now but I’ve been in touch with coach [Brian] Goorjian and we’re hopeful I can join the Boomers.”

After a late withdrawal from the Boomers’ 2019 World Cup campaign, Simmons said he intended to wear the green and gold as Australia’s men target a first international tournament medal.

“It is a well-balanced squad selected by position with a nice blend of experience coupled with a lot of new and exciting players coming through,” said coach Brian Goorjian.

“These are our top 24 available players and included is significant representation from the NBL, showing the strength of our local league where the standard of competition is recognised worldwide.

“I have spoken to each player over the past fortnight and have been extremely impressed, to a man, by their overwhelming desire to play for Australia in Tokyo.” Check out the full squad below:

Deng Adel, Aron Baynes, Ryan Broekhoff, Xavier Cooks, Mitch Creek, Matthew Dellavedova, Dante Exum, Josh Giddey, Chris Goulding, Josh Green, Isaac Humphries, Joe Ingles, Nick Kay, Jock Landale, Mitch McCarron, Will McDowell-White, Will Magnay, Thon Maker, Patty Mills, Brock Motum, Mitch Norton, Duop Reath, Ben Simmons, Matisse Thybulle.
