Afters several seasons of increasing sexual tension Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth finally got together in Monday’s Game of Thrones episode, titled “The Last of the Starks”. But in a major blindside, Jaime took off not long after taking the new knight’s V card, citing his eternal love of Cersei and breaking poor Brienne’s heart.
And she wasn’t the only one dismayed by the dog act – plenty of fans online expressed their displeasure with Jaime.
But many have speculated that the way in which Jaime described the many misdeeds he undertook in the name of love could actually be a good sign.
“You think I’m a good man,” Jaime says to Brienne. “I pushed a boy out of a tower window, crippled him for life, for Cersei. I strangled my cousin with my own hands, just to get back to Cersei. I would’ve murdered every man, woman, and child in Riverrun, for Cersei. She’s hateful, and so am I.”

Fans jumped on his use of past tense, suggesting that his redemptive character arc hasn’t been brought to a grinding halt. In fact, he’s heading back to King’s Landing to stop his sister, rather than support her. Consider that after Bronn’s revelation he’s learned that he’s now on his sister’s hit list with little bro Tyrion. Plus, he decided to ghost Brienne after hearing that Cersei has the upper hand thanks to Euron Greyjoy’s ambush of Danaerys and her dragons.
There’s also the prophecy to think about. When Cersei was a girl a fortune teller told her a few things (which have since come true) including that “the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.” Valonqar is said to mean “little brother” in High Valyrian, hence why Cersei has been trying to top Tyrion for all these years. However, the prophecy could refer to Jaime, who is her twin, but was born moments after Cersei.
Jaime might have bolted from Winterfell because he knows he is one of a select few people who can get close to Cersei and stop her. He also has experience with taking out the person sitting on the Iron Throne…
