We-Vibe‘s Head of Sexual Empowerment Johanna Rief has shared the five new trends she expects to see dominate the market this year.

1.VR, 3D Printing and Sex Robots

As technology improves, expect it to not only be incorporated into our bedroom play but also display more human-like emotions, explains Rief.

“Advancements in virtual reality will make it possible to have sex with anyone, at any time, in any place (just like in Black Mirror’s 2019 Striking Vipers episode) while 3D printing is set to revolutionise toys over the next decade – imagine printing your own fully customised, personalised vibrators at home,” she says.

“Meanwhile, sex dolls are set to become robotic, using artificial intelligence and machine learning to be fully reactive and responsive to touch and feel.”

2. Male Pleasure Movement

Over the last couple years, we’ve certainly lobbied to normalise male sex toys. 2020 might just be the year it hits mainstream.

“While the development of sex toys to date has primarily been driven by women and their requirements, with the first wand vibrator developed as a masturbation aid to treat hysteria and back problems, the rise in self-pleasure popularity opened the field to men as well. Prostate stimulation is becoming less and less taboo, and men are being encouraged to sexperiment with this pleasure centre by using toys,” Rief continues.

3. Sexual Mindfulness

There’s meditation and there’s mindful eating. Now sex is coming to the party in the deep-thought space. Time to really soak (sorry!) up the experience.

“In our busy world, many wellbeing experts are encouraging us to ‘slow down’ and practice mindfulness to live a more fulfilling life. The sex world is no different, with a trend towards mindful ‘slow’ sex taking off across the globe. Leading sex educators are telling students to utilise techniques more commonly found in yoga and meditation to have slow, fulfilling sexual experiences, encouraging experimentation solo and as a couple.

4. Responsive Technology

“Siri, make my vibrator join in.” Okay, maybe we’re not there yet but Rief suggests that this year, toys could be far more responsive for a seamless sexual experience.

“Typically, sex toys have buttons and remotes to help users control settings, vibrations and intensity. Advances in technology will see these toys becoming more responsive and intuitive to touch, removing the awkwardness of fumbling for a remote during sexual play. New toys comes with a squeeze remote, increasing or decreasing the intensity of the couples vibrator with just a touch, or an additional setting allows the intensity of vibrations to be determined by movements of the body against the vibrator itself – hands-free pleasure,” she continues.

5. Long Distance Play

At the backend of last year, we saw tech that could boost intimacy between long-distance couples. Any glitches with using remote controlled toys should be put to bed in 2020 – get ready to play with your partner from afar.

“In an increasingly global world, travel and long-distance relationships are becoming common place. Instead of relying on phone and video to aid in keeping the spark alive, couples can use app controls to connect to their partner’s vibrator.
