It’s been 18 years since Hugh Jackman first tore across our cinema screens in the formidable figure of Wolverine, and frankly, we can’t imagine the character being played by anyone else.

So when we heard that he wasn’t actually the first choice for the original X-Men film, our jaws dropped.

Speaking to the Aussies In Hollywood podcast, Jackman revealed that he scored the role after Scottish actor Dougray Scott withdrew due to filming commitments for Mission Impossible: 2.

The actors ran into each other before filming started at the opening of Fox Studios in Sydney.

“He [Dougray] came up afterwards and I said, ‘Mate, I’m really sorry’,” Jackman revealed.

“And he said, ‘Mate, it’s nothing to do with you. That is an awesome role, go and crush it. You’re going to be great’. I always thought he was a class act.”

Don’t feel too bad for Scott. When asked on a red-carpet last year, he admitted he’d turned the role down three times because he “didn’t want to do it”.

“The movie I was doing at the time just overran by so much that I couldn’t do it in the end,” he said. “So that was the story with Wolverine. I never think about it to be honest with you.”

We bet he does a little bit.
