Ever Wondered Why Sex Feels So Good? Science Can Explain

One thing is undeniable: for most of us, we naturally crave sex. And it’s for a good reason – we feel bloody good for it. But why is that the case? A new study has the answer.

Research conducted by George Mason University and published in the Journal Emotion suggests sex can provide emotional benefits, strengthening relationships, increasing happiness and giving meaning to life.

Scientists examined 152 college students after recording their sexual behaviours, emotions and feelings for a three week duration. Researchers measured wellbeing by noting positive feelings, mood and meaningfulness.

Results found that participants were happier after sexual activity whether it be kissing or sexual intercourse. However, interestingly, the quality of the sexual experience or their relationship status did not influence their post-sex mood.

Meanwhile, previous research suggests it can take up to 48 hours to enjoy sex

“Our research shows that sexual satisfaction remains elevated 48 hours after sex. And people with a stronger sexual afterglow – that is, people who report a higher level of sexual satisfaction 48 hours after sex – report higher levels of relationship satisfaction several months later,” said lead study author and psychological scientist Andrea Meltzer.
