Tinder Launches A Video Chat Feature, And We Know What We’re Doing Tonight

Since meeting prospective new partners IRL has become all-but-impossible in the era of self-iso (cheers, COVID!) dating app Tinder has come up with a genius way for singles to keep their interpersonal skills up to scratch.

Introducing ‘Face-to-Face’ video calls. Put simply, it’s an in-app service that allows you to chat with whoever you match with without having to exchange phone numbers.

Unlike in other video chat apps, both people have to opt in to make the call happen, but only after agreeing to keep the interaction PG. Meaning no nudity, sexual reference, hate speech, violence or illegal activities allowed. The screen is also split in half the whole time, so the caller can always see themselves as well as the person they’re contacting.

We prioritise safety in everything we do, and understand that putting yourself out there and meeting new people requires a certain level of both control and comfort,” the company said in a statement. “So we built our feature with some thoughtful tweaks that help it stand out from your typical video experience. And no, you don’t have to worry about unwanted calls.”

They also recommend starting the convo via text first, before jumping right into a video call.

“No one should be put in the corner when it comes to getting to know a match,” the statement continues. “Conversation is a two-way street, and it’s better when you’re together 50/50. Plus, this helps you make sure you’re putting your best face forward with your match.”

Unfortunately, the feature is still in the testing stage and is only avail in Australia, Brazil, Chile, France, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and a few US states so far. That said, if received well, it’s expected to be rolled out worldwide real soon.
