What We Know So Far About Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’

With Game of Thrones well and truly behind us, you might be struggling to find a new fantasy series to binge on. Why not turn your attention to Netflix’ The Witcher starring former MH Cover star Henry Cavill? Set in medieval times, this might just be your next Monday night ritual.

What is The Witcher about?

Unless you fancy yourself a true bookworm, you might not be familiar with the original short stories by Polish author Andrzej Zapkowski. The Witcher shares the same plot as the novels, set in medieval times. Henry Cavill plays the main character, Geralt of Rivia, a travelling monster hunter or otherwise known as a “witcher”.

The official synopsis reads, “Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.”

What is The Witcher‘s release date?

A now-deleted tweet by Netflix Netherlands suggests that the series will air on Tuesday, December 17. However, there’s been no official word from Netflix US or Netflix AU on The Witcher’s release date.

What we know from first trailer of The Witcher

The official teaser for the new series came out in July.

During Comic-Con, when fans got their first real glimpse of The Wticher, executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told press that “you constantly try to put yourself in the shoes of characters and think what would you do [in a situation]. I think you’ll end up having a lot of empathy for characters you didn’t expect to.”

In the trailer, we got our first real look at Cavill’s character who looks like something out of Lord of The Rings. Sporting a long silver mane, fans familiar with the video games may notice a striking resemblance.

How is the cast of The Witcher‘s shaping up?

It’s not just former Superman Henry Cavill who will be appearing in the new binge-worthy show. While he plays the lead role in Geralt of Rivia, he’ll be joined by newcomers Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra, Mimi Ndiweni, Millie Brady, and Therica Wilson-Read.

We can’t wait for this to start streaming.
