Reckon your relationship can stand the test the time? It might come down to one little thing: if you have great sex the first time you sleep together.

According to a study conducted by the University of California, Davis, If you have a ball the first time you get down and dirty, you’re more likely to go the distance.

Published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, more than 800 people were surveyed of varying ages to determine how their experiences with meeting their partners influenced the longevity of their relationships.

“People would hook up with some partners for the first time and think ‘wow, this is pretty good.’ People tried to turn those experiences into long-term relationships,” said Paul Eastwick, an associate professor of psychology at UC Davis. “Others sparked more of a ‘meh’ reaction. Those were the short-term ones.”

The research suggest that “people may end up in short-term relationships when they are “just a little” attracted to the other person — enough to keep having sex, but maybe not for very long.”

“Long-term relationships may be the ones that start especially exciting and sexy and grow into something stable and lasting,” adds the research.
