The Sports World Reacts To Novak Djokovic’s Positive COVID-19 Test

Novak Djokovic has been criticised for his decision to host an exhibition tournament in the middle of the coronavirus crisis, after he became one of four top players to return a positive test.

Viktor Troicki, Borna Coric and Grigor Dimitrov were all infected while attending the Adria Tour across Serbia and Croatia, along with a handful of coaches and Djokovic and his wife.

It’s believed social distancing measures weren’t properly adhered to, with players seen hugging at the net, posing for pictures with fans and stands at max capacity.

“The moment we arrived in Belgrade we went to be tested. My result is positive, just as Jelena’s, while the results of our children are negative,” Djokovic said in a statement.

“Everything we did in the past month, we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions. Our tournament meant to unite and share a message of solidarity and compassion throughout the region.”

Aussie Nick Kyrgios has been vocal in calling out the “stupidity” of the world No.1 on Twitter.

“Prayers up to all the players that have contracted Covid – 19. Don’t @ me for anything I’ve done that has been ‘irresponsible’ or classified as ‘stupidity’ – this takes the cake,” he wrote, retweeting a video of the athletes partying shirtless at a Belgrade nightclub.

“Boneheaded decision to go ahead with the ‘exhibition’ speedy recovery fellas, but that’s what happens when you disregard all protocols,” he continued in a follow up tweet.
