4 Male Cosmetics Trends That Will Make You Rethink Your Grooming Routine

If you asked me a few years ago about my grooming routine, I would have laughed you off. The thought of anything more than a shower would have sounded ridiculous and you couldn’t have paid me to try new products. But fast forward five years and suddenly, male cosmetics is very real. No longer is it taboo to say you’re moisturising or to take a genuine interest in the best scrubs for your body.

So what’s in store for 2020? Here’s what the experts from male make up and skincare brand Tony & Munro are expecting over the next 12 months.

1. SPF

No longer is sunscreen reserved for a session at the beach. Just leaving shaded areas can do damage to your skin. So it’s time for us fellas to incorporate SPF into our morning routine to avoid problems with our skin down the track.

“Opt for mineral suncream if you have sensitive skin and avoided perfumed options,” Carlene Thomas Bailey previously wrote in Men’s Health.

“While the official advice is to fill up a shot glass worth of cream and generously apply to exposed skin, if you can’t be bothered, at least double up what you think is the right amount and leave no bit of skin uncovered, to avoid burnt toes and burnt hairlines.”

2. Moisturisers

It’s a classic cabinet staple for women but the truth is men need it much more than their female counterparts. Male skin is much tougher and oilier so it’s time to start lathering up.

“Moisturisers are another powerful way to prevent premature ageing,” says Ewan Belsey, Co-founder at Tony & Munro. “It can even fight off breakouts and blemishes, as they help to regulate skin’s hydration and control excess oil.”

3. Concealer

This is a real taboo topic: male makeup. But even in small doses, it can do you a world of confidence and people wouldn’t even know you applied some. Years ago I worked on set for a live television broadcast and if you thought your heroes were flawless, think again.

“Concealers made specifically for men’s skin are quickly emerging as a must-have product, offering correcting properties that smooth red undertones, reduce dark circles and cover the odd blemish,” Belsey continues.

“This secret weapon will soon be a part of every man’s skincare routine,”

4. Eye gels and creams

So you’ve had a bad night’s sleep and you want to avoid those questions about your puffy eyes. Eye gels and creams are the perfect solution to invigorating your skin.

“A natural addition to any skincare routine, eye products target the softer and more sensitive skin around the eyes, which is prone to puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines,” Belsey adds.
