According to a new study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour, men who talk faster are more successful at luring women. Researchers put this down to men speaking more confidently.
Gathering 124 heterosexual participants - 56 men and 68 women, researchers organised a dating game, where volunteers were asked to seduce a potential date.
Results found that the more romantically experienced candidates tended to speak faster - the quickest at 6.47 syllables per second. Meanwhile, those who struggled in the dating game lagged behind, as slow as 4.87 syllables per second.
“Men displaying faster articulation rate and relatively louder voice in this study had higher previous success with women. These men would presumably feel more self-assured when placed in a mating or competitive context," says lead researcher, Alexandre Suire from the University of Montpellier in France.
“This self-confidence may have relaxed male subjects, stabilising their tempo and vocal intensity across speech. If so, this suggests that when men feel confident, they speak with faster and louder speech.”
