A Man's Guide To Shaving Your Legs

Silky smooth in a few simple steps - by Lauren Williamson

A Man's Guide To Shaving Your Legs

Whether you're trying to shave a few seconds off your cycling PB, you want to avoid a strapping tape leg wax, or you just like the silky feeling – sometimes a man has gotta shave his legs.

Unfortunately, even for women, shaving your legs isn't really one of those things you're taught when you come of hair removal age. It mostly involves a lot of winging it and a significant amount of blood until you finally get the hang of manoeuvring around your ankle bones.

So you can avoid similar slicing, here is a man's guide to shaving legs.

First of all... is shaving your best option?

The pros of shaving is that it's quick, simple and very affordable. The cons are that leg hair grows back quickly and sensitive skin types are prone to razor burn, itchy legs and ingrown hairs. Opting for waxing – while far more painful – will yield longer lasting results, while laser hair removal – while expensive – will likely remove hair forever.

How to shave your legs

1. Trim

If it's the first time you're removing your leg hair, you might want to carefully trim the area with an electric razor. You won't get far starting the job with a two-blade.

2. Use a clean, sharp razor

It doesn't matter much whether your razor is cheap or expensive, just ensure that it is clean, rust-free and sharp.

3. Wet your legs

It's best to shave your legs while showering or bathing. Avoid dry shaving at all costs! Shaving moist, warm legs will help you get a closer and more comfortable shave.

4. Shaving cream is helpful, but not essential

Lather up with shaving cream or shaving soap if you like (or even a layer of hair conditioner if you're desperate).

5. Shave against the direction of hair growth

Unlike shaving your face, shaving against the direction of hair growth is the best way to shave your legs to get them as smooth as possible. Start at your ankle and slowly move the razor upwards with gentle pressure.

6. Rinse your razor

Your razor will begin to fill with hair after a few stroke to be sure to rinse it under water every now and then.

7. Rinse and assess

Once you're finished, rinse your legs under water and feel to see if you have got all of your leg hairs. Re-shave if you find any rogue spots.

8. Dry and moisturise

Towel try your legs and apply a body oil or lotion to moisturise your legs. This is how to prevent in grown hairs and red dots after shaving.

How often should you shave your legs?

That's down to personal preference but you'll find that you will most likely need to shave your legs every one to three days if you want to keep skin smooth.

Extra tips

  • Exfoliating can help reduce red bumps and irritation by clearing away dead skin cells that can before trapped in your pores post-shave. Ensure you exfoliate before shaving with a body scrub or body wash with glycolic acid.
  • Don't store your razor in the shower – that will cause it to rust and build bacteria leading to infection
  • Slow and steady wins the race – going fast and hard will result in your bathroom looking like a bloody crime scene
