It’s the 70s fashion trend that’s making a serious comeback. But like all retro fads, it takes more than picking a piece up from your local op shop to pull it off. And the famed turtleneck is no different.

“The versatility of the fine knit turtleneck has been evident in fashion circles for a few years but, was originally made popular in the 70’s,” says Men’s Health style editor, Jeff Lack.

Originating in the 1920s, the trend has quickly become a staple for Hollywood A-listers like Michael B Jordan and Donald Glover, but Lack suggests you don’t need chiseled chops to pull it off.

“Flattering for weak jawlines, wrinkled necks and warm as toast, the turtleneck just keeps on giving,” continues Lack.

When it comes to shopping for one, Lack is a fan of keeping colours neutral. But don’t be afraid to be edgier if you have the confidence.

“Play it safe with black, navy and charcoal. Ramp it up with tan, light grey and white.”

According to Lack, there are 4 main ways to pull off the top.

One option is the tailored trousers, turtleneck and leather-biker jacket look. Adding a leather layer on top of your knitwear will show off your more primitive characteristics – ruggedness, toughness. vigour.

For more a formal occasion, like the Black Panther star Jordan can be seen wearing, a dark turtleneck incorporated into a three piece suit creates a more sophisticated look. Avoid baggy knitwear to give the impression the outfit is fitted.

In winter, turtlenecks will compliment an overcoat and simple chinos – comfortable while effortlessly fashionable.

If you’re looking to test the boundaries, miss matching pieces will give off that more retro vibe. Think a sports coat, suit pants and a turtleneck. Don’t be afraid to play with colours.

While different styles might be suited to different people, if there’s something we do know, it’s that turtlenecks are here and there here to stay.
