In fact, gin’s unique distillation process means it’s entirely free of sulphites.

But darker-coloured alcoholic beverages – including beer and red wine – have higher levels of these two chemicals.

According to Asthma UK, as well as ethanol, “alcoholic drinks contain a natural food chemical called histamine, which is found at particularly high levels in red wine and some beers. Red wine is the main culprit, followed by white wine, beer and then cider.”

Can’t wind down without a warming glass of shiraz? Opt for an organic wine.
