Twitter Is Losing It Over News Of Conor McGregor’s Retirement

You can always count on Conor McGregor to cause controversy online – whether he’s trash talking his opponent or slamming soccer refs – and his latest post is no exception.

Following the UFC 250 event over the weekend, the Irish former two-div champ took to Twitter to announce he was hanging up his MMA gloves for good.

“Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting,” he wrote, alongside a snap taken with his mum in Las Vegas after one of his world-title wins. “Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been.”

The news should come as a huge surprise, given the 31-year-old made a triumphant return to the UFC just five months ago (remember when he dismantled top-ranked fighter Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone?) But considering this is McGregor’s third time retiring from the sport (once in 2016 and then again in 2019), fans aren’t buying it.

Even Dana White, the President of the UFC, isn’t convinced McGregor is prepared to throw in the towel.

“The game just does not excite me, and that’s that,” the athlete said of his decision in an interview with ESPN journalist Ariel Helwani. “All this waiting around. There’s nothing happening. I’m going through opponent options and there’s really nothing there at the minute. There’s nothing that’s exciting.”

I guess only time will tell if this one sticks.
