The Latest Social-Media Craze Just Raised The Stupidity Stakes

“Life is hard, but it’s harder if you’re stupid.” A classic quote from American author Michael Crichton that seems extremely appropriate every time a new internet ‘challenge’ rolls around. Fresh off the heels of the tide-pod eating craze, internet users in a desperate search for views and likes, are taking part in a new potentially deadly trend, the “condom-snorting challenge”.

The new challenge involves stuffing a condom up your nose, blocking the other nostril, and inhaling deep enough to such the condom into the back of your throat. Yep. People are doing that.

“As graphic as it is, we have to show parents because teens are going online looking for challenges and re-creating them,” explains Stephen Enriquez, a state education specialist in from San Antonio told Fox.

In a Forbes article published last week in the wake of the condom-snorting epidemic, associate professor at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Healh, Bruce Lee, highlighted the dangers of inhaling condoms. You know, in case they weren’t obvious already.

One of his examples included reference to a report highlighting a horrifying tale of a 27 year-old woman who accidentally inhaled a condom during oral sex, resulting in pneumonia and a collapsed lung.

“Even if you manage to successfully pull the condom out through your mouth, inhaling a condom up your nose would be very uncomfortable and potentially quite painful,” Lee wrote in his article. “Would it really be worth all that just to get more likes and views?”
